Overview The Onsite Power Generation Technician assists Senior Technicians in complex work in the efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of campus emergency power systems. They accomplish this by applying skills in conjunction with basic technical knowledge and the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests. They work as a member of a team on various projects or assignments.

This position will be hired at either an Apprentice or Journeyman level based upon qualifications and duties assigned.  See Qualifications section below.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintenance of diesel engine generators and automatic transfer switches. (Apprentice assists in these efforts)
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections on diesel engine generators, automatic transfer switches, and diesel fuel storage systems.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety, efficiency, and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area and work site.
  • Keeps detailed and up to date records on all repairs and maintenance.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Journeyman provides technical guidance and direction to less senior technicians. Apprentice will also:

Complete the 3-year Gen Tech apprentice program provided by USU Facilities.

Qualifications Minimum Qualification:

This position willl be hired at either an Apprentice or Journeyman level: For Apprentice:  High school diploma AND desire to learn about the onsite power generation trade. For Journeyman:  Minimum of 4 years direct work experience in the diesel or gasoline mechanics trade OR a formal trade school certificate of training and/or schooling in the diesel or gasoline trade plus experience to equal 4 years.

Preferred Qualification:

For Apprentice: Currently attending OR graduated from a formal trade school in the diesel or gasoline trade. For Journeyman: 5 years of direct work experience in diesel engine, automatic transfer switch maintenance and repair and applying journeyman level skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

For Apprentice:

Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to the trade. Basic computer skills. Customer service skills. Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blue prints and schematic drawings. Ability to work without supervision. Ability to service and maintain diesel engine generators. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers. Ability to follow directions

Ability to travel to statewide campuses throughout the year

Additionally for Journeyman:
