LOCATION AND POSITION INFORMATION:

This position is located at theLouisiana Civil Rights Museumin the Office of State Museums in New Orleans, LA.

This position will be filled as a Job Appointment. In the event that funds become available for a permanent position, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Job Description:

The mission of the Office of State Museum (OSM) is to collect, preserve, and present, as an educational resource, objects of art, artifacts, and the like the reflect the history, art, and culture of Louisiana for citizens of a visitors to the State of Louisiana. One of ten Museum facilities within the OSM system, the Louisiana Civil Rights Museum (LCRM) is a living entity that informs, honors, educates, and inspires the world about civil rights through the Louisiana experience. To achieve the LCRM's vision, the mission is to use the Louisiana civil rights experience to heal, educate, celebrate, and engage for social justice. The subject position is responsible for public and community engagement and outreach, creation and implementation of educational programming, events and tours for the general public, families, children and school groups related to the subject matter and interpretive exhibitions at the LCRM. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Assistant Secretary 2 and works collaboratively with the Museum's Education department and other curatorial team members and the Museum's Marketing and Events department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

30% Interpretation, Program Development, Events and Community Outreach

  • Researches, develops and executes mission-driven educational and public outreach programs of interest to K-12, adult, family, and other Museum and Tourism/Visitor audiences. This includes but is not limited to the development and implementation of formal education initiatives and materials that are in accordance with the state’s Grade Level Expectations (GLEs).

  • Produces program outlines, lesson plans, tours and activities that can be readily implemented by teachers, and by others with minimal training.

  • Designs programs, tours, events, and activities that enrich, enhance, and supplement the awareness and interpretation of the permanent LCRM exhibition and pertinent subject matter, and that will encourage visitation to the LCRM and thus create marketing opportunities, as well as additional earned income.

  • Proposes, plans, and implements traveling and changing exhibits.

  • Provides educational and public outreach via publications, social media platforms, website contributions, newsletters and other outreach content, and coordinates with the LSM Marketing team in such endeavors.

    20% Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Staffs the LCRM Advisory Board and LCRM Friends organization and works with these boards and volunteers to further the mission of the LCRM and to attract visitors, volunteers and support for the Museum.

  • Supports the fundraising efforts of the LCRM board, LCRM Friends group, and others engaged in fundraising efforts for the LCRM, including in the pursuit of grants and community support for the LCRM, and coordinates with the Assistant Secretary and other LSM support groups in conducting such activities and in the administration of grants and other designated support for the LCRM.

  • Works collaboratively with formal partners and informal institutional relationships on mission-based educational and community outreach endeavors as determined by the LCRM’s mission, resources, and initiatives.

  • Works with the State Office of Tourism, and tour operators to attract visitors to the Museum and to encourage visitation to civil rights sites around the state.

  • Coordinates and collaborates with the staff and resources provided by the New Orleans Convention Center to enhance the operations, activities and visitation of the LCRM.

    15% Facility Operations and Support

  • Ensures that the LCRM is open to the public, supervises the LCRM TIC staff and coordinates with other pertinent staff and volunteers to ensure admissions ticket sales.

  • Oversees and supports staff and volunteers in preparation for events, programming, and daily operations. Tasks include, but are not limited to, setting up tables and chairs, general cleaning, cleaning exhibits, operating the ticket sales equipment, etc.

    10% Volunteers & Docents

  • Develops and administers volunteer and docent programs for the effective execution of museum programs and operations.

  • Recruits, trains, and schedules volunteers based on K-12 educational, adult, and family programming. Convention Center and other tourism visitation and other support needs, including for the conducting of tours of the LCRM and to assist in the staffing of the facility.

  • Conducts in-service workshops to train volunteers, docents, and staff on matters related to educational material, outreach programs and operations of the facility.

  • Coordinates and supervises interns, docents, and volunteers in the professional implementation of programs and tours.

    10% Teacher Workshops, Tour Groups, and Public Outreach

  • Contacts teachers and schools to ensure teachers are aware of the Museum programs, workshops, and others opportunities.

  • Plans and executes teacher workshops.

  • Identifies and contacts Community groups, tour groups, and other pertinent parties to ensure community support and visitation of the Museum.

    5% Administration

  • Plans budget, submit expense requests, and monitors expenses to ensure that LCRM programming and operations has adequate resources.

  • Prepares reports on education and community contacts and numbers, program development, education and outreach budgets and other related topics.

    5% Curatorial Support

  • Works with LSM’s curatorial team to plan, develop and execute exhibit-related work and artifact acquisitions.

  • Coordinates with registrar on paperwork for incoming and outgoing loans and coordinates curatorial needs for the Civil Rights collections.

    5% Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree in American history, American studies, anthropology, archaeology, art history, cultural geography, history, historical geography, museum science, museology, or fine arts, plus two years of professional level curatorial experience.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

A master's degree in qualifying fields will substitute for one year of the required experience.

A Ph.D. in any qualifying field will substitute for all the required experience.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
